Foundation Repair Photo Album: Fixing Inadequate Wall Supports
Foundation walls endure a lot of stress from the forces involved in holding up the home. One such force is caused by the natural expansion of soil around the home and it pushes inward against the walls.
This inward pressure can cause cracking and damage to the foundation walls, as well as cause the walls to bow inward. To fix this problem, a different company installed metal pillars that stood straight against the curving wall. This method did not adequately solve the problem as he wall was still bowed and continued to crack and fail.
Rather than wait for the old supports to fail, the homeonwers turned to Woods Basement Systems to fix the problem properly. The foreman for the job installed wall anchors to permanently support the walls. Wall anchors work by burying an anchor plate outside in the compact soil that doesn't expand and attaching it to a plate on the inside of the wall. By tightening this connection, the wall is pulled in a supported position. If the right wall repairs are installed soon enough, these wall anchors can even pull the wall back into a straight position. The final step was to patch the cracks to make the wall whole again.
Now that the right repair is in place, the homeowner won't have to worry about paying to fix the problem again and again. That's because the wall anchor system is a permanent and reliable fix to bowing walls.
Severe Cracks
Pressure from the outside soil caused cracks like this to appear in the foundation walls of this home.
Ineffective Repair
This black beams are meant to support the wall. They are not effective as they do not address the root problem - the soil outside pressing inward.
The Wrong Repair
These braces do not properly strengthen the wall. The areas between the braces still frequently crack and bow inward.
Bowing Walls
The wall near the top of this photo has begun to bow inward from the force of the expanding soil outside the home.
Wall Anchors Installed
These small plates will help permanently support the wall by dealing with the pressure from expanding soil outside.
Wall Anchor Near a Crack
Once the wall anchors have been used to support the wall, the cracks like this one can be patched properly. Without proper wall support, cracks like this will often keep reappearing even when patched.
Proper Support
This wall can be straightened now, thanks to the proper support that wall anchors provide.
