There are few options for helical piers. Per the engineering specifications, we installed square shaft pre-footing helical piers for this multi-unit apartment housing in Hazelwood, MO. Knowing the load calculated by an engineer that the footings need to hold in weight, square shaft helical will work as designed and installed. For existing structure, we prefer to use round shafted helical piers because their strength allows for deeper soil penetration and holding capacity for the structure. Once the helical piers are installed then the re-bar steel footing reinforcement are “caged” around the flat pier caps and the concrete footing are poured. After that, the foundation walls are framed and poured and then the framing of the structure begins.

Pier Locations

Each pier is marked prior to installation in the footing trench. Also, each pier is checked vertically prior to installation. This lead section is a three flight, DISK, helical pier by design from an engineering firm. the smallest flight is first at the ground level. This photo shows the middle and the largest top flight of this helical pier.

With the excavator supplying the power to drive the helical into the ground, the 3rd and largest flight is being torqued into the soil.

Engineered Depth

Each pier location has a specific depth that need to be reached. Once the lead flight is installed with the 3 sized disks, additional square shafts are attached and driven.

Square Shaft Sections

Attaching the second square shaft section without helical flights allows the excavator to apply the torque needed to reach the engineered depth per pier. Third and fourth sections also may be added as needed.
