Vertical cracks as you can see here in this photo are a symptom of foundation settlement. In addition to vertical cracks, tilting chimneys, doors and windows sticking, and cracked slab floors are all common symptoms of a settling foundation. As the soil around the home settles, the foundation settles with it. Unfortunately, the soil and the foundation do not always settle equally.
