Crawl Space Repair Photo Album: Crawlspace Waterproofing with CleanSpace™
This crawlspace in Champaign, IL. had a thin plastic vapor barrier to protect the home above from the hazards of a dirt crawlspace. But this thin plastic was not enough to properly protect the home. That's why homeowner Dan R. turned to the experts at Woods Basement Systems to install CleanSpace™ throughout the crawlspace.
CleanSpace™ is a tough, waterproof liner designed especially for crawlspaces. CleanSpace™ is made of a tear-proof material that will allow it to be permanently fastened in place while its anti-microbial layer will prevent mold growth across its surface. Once in place, CleanSpace™ will block water and water vapor from entering the home where they might otherwise cause damage. Instead, this water is directed to the sump pump so it can be removed from the home. In this home, a SmartSump™ was installed to deal with the water buildup.
SmartSump™ systems feature a powerful pump in an airtight sump pit. This pit is sealed to be air tight so that any water that sits at the bottom of the sump pit can't simply evaporate into the crawlspace air. This lid was also modified to allow a drainage hose from the Sedona dehumidifier that was installed in the crawlspace to drain any water it pulls out of the air. And the Sedona can pull a lot of water vapor out of the air! In fact, the Sedona can drain upwards of 12 gallons of water from the air in a single day. If that weren't enough, the Sedona also filters the air, removing things like dust mites and mold spores and making the air cleaner and healthier for the inhabitants of the home.
This crawlspace is well waterproofed now with CleanSpace™ preventing water and water vapor from entering the home and the SmartSump™ and Sedona™ removing any water from above or below the CleanSpace™ surface to ensure everything in the crawlspace is dry and safe.
Leaking Walls
The bottom of these foundation walls shows signs of leaking. This water could leak inside above the waterproofing layer here and cause problems. That's why CleanSpace™ extends up the walls to provide protection against leaking walls.
Humid Air Through Windows
Windows in crawlspaces will let damp, unconditioned air inside. This air will make the home less comfortable and can also bring water vapor with it, which could increase mold growth and rot as well as condense on cooler surface and turn into puddles.
Thin Plastic Liner
The previous waterproofing measure down here was a simple plastic sheet. This plastic sheet won't stop water and water vapor from seeping through the walls, rising up along the support posts and can do nothing to combat the spread of mold. CleanSpace™ will do all of these things once it replaces this plastic liner.
Incapsulated Crawlspace
CleanSpace™ will protect the crawlspace from mold, pests and water vapor, including the walls and pillars that support the home.
CleanSpace™, Sedona and SmartSump™
CleanSpace™ covers the surfaces of the crawlspace to block water and water vapor from entering the crawlspace while the Sedona and SmartSump™ will work together to eliminate any water and water vapor that are already there.
SmartSump™
This sump pump features an air-tight liner that will prevent water from escaping the sump pit by evaporating. It also features a special floor drain to catch leaks inside the crawlspace and an alarm to alert homeowners to dangeroulsy high water levels.
