Dirt Floors Allow Water Into the Crawlspace
The floor of this crawlspace will allow water to rise in from below. As water levels around the home rise, thid dirt floor will do nothing to stop them from leaking into the crawlspace and causing damage. Water vapor will also rise through dirt floors and cause damage to the surfaces of the crawlspace as well as rise further into the home and make the air feel damp and uncomfortable.
Condensing Water
Another way water builds up on the crawlspace floor is by condensing on cooler surfaces and dripping down. That's why it is important to seal the crawlspace from outside, so humid air doesn't enter the crawlspace and condense.
Other Avenues for Water Vapor
Water vapor doesn't just rise through the dirt floor. It can also come in from outside, like through this entryway. Adding a secure, airtight door to the entrance to the crawlspace will help eliminate the amount of humid air that gets inside the crawlspace.
Water Leaking Inside
Water leaks into the crawlspace through the ground and through tiny gaps in the walls. This water can build up and cause damage to the crawlspace surfaces. It can also feed mold growth and create a haven for insects and other pests.
