Woods Sponsors Cancer Survivors at Annual Relay for Life
Collinsville, IL — Half of all men and one-third of all women in the United States will develop cancer during their lifetimes. Although more than 13 million people alive today in the U.S. have had and still have some form of cancer, some of these people will survive.
The annual Relay for Life of Collinsville ran from Friday evening (June 7th) to Saturday morning (June 8th). Nearly 200 people registered on 11 different teams. Overall, about 300 people attended the event, and 20 of those people were cancer survivors.
"The American Cancer Society and the Relay For Life of Collinsville would like to extend thanks to Woods Basement Systems for their generous donation to our Survivor VIP tent at the event!" exclaimed an ecstatic Christopher Andrews with Relay for Life of Collinsville.
Woods Basement Systems is an annual sponsor of the Relay for Life of Collinsville and an active agent in the fight against cancer. This year, Woods provided a healthy pallet of fresh fruit, granola bars, and ice-cold water for survivors at the Survivor's VIP tent. Woods also provides do-it-yourself test kits for families to test their homes for the presence of radon—the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers—and has a team of system design and installation professionals to help mitigate radon and reduce exposure to the radioactive gas.
The Relay also featured "The Taste of Relay" that included Domino's Pizza, tacos from Bert's Chuck Wagon, Italian sub sandwiches from Spirito's Italian Store, home made tortellini soup, hot dogs, popcorn, and cotton candy.
For entertainment, Officer Brad Akers of the Collinsville Police Department and his partner, K-9 officer Sable, provided a K-9 demonstration for the crowd. The Collinsville Fire Department brought a Fire Truck, an Ambulance, and Sparky the Fire Dog. Students from McArther's Tae Kwon Do demonstrated their skills during the Fight Back ceremony and their dance skills during the Dance-Off. Children enjoyed a bounce house and face painting. Attendees also competed in a Frozen T-Shirt Contest and scavenger hunts.
In just one night, the Relay for Life of Collinsville raised $2900—boosting the organization's year-to-date total to $19,566 in much-needed funds and helping increase awareness to save lives from cancer through the Relay For Life movement.
