What's That Smell? The Stack Effect: How a Smell from the Crawlspace Can Affect the Whole Home
The stack effect creates an airflow from the bottom to the top of the home, from the basement or crawlspace to the uppermost floor. As the air becomes warm and rises, it leaks out of the upper levels. This air from the lowest level to the top then mixes with the other air in the house. So if the lowest level is a crawlspace, this air will affect you whether you go into the crawlspace or not.
The solution to this problem begins with isolating your crawlspace from the earth. The CleanSpace Encapsulation System can achieve this, as it is fitted into the crawlspace to completely seal it off from the dirt floor and the exterior. CleanSpace is a thick plastic liner, similar to that of a pool. It will stop water vapor from permeating up the floor and allow drainage from the floor to a sump pump system such as our SmartSump, which is specially designed to fit inside the small crawlspace and will pump any water out of it and keep it away from the home.
Once the issues of a damp crawlspace have been resolved, the rest of your home will become healthier, more comfortable to live in, and smell better!
