Protecting Your Foundation During a Drought

Glen Carbon, IL —  Tim Warchol of Woods Basement Systems recently spoke with Jeff Bernthal of KTVI Fox 2 regarding the effects of a drought on basements and foundations.

Glen Carbon homeowner Evan Thomas has cracks in the ground around his house as a result of this summer's drought.  During an extreme drought, the clay soil shrinks, creating cracks in the ground and leaving voids around the foundation of your home.

Tim Warchol Explains Drought Effects on Foundations“Those voids allow the house to settle and then create cracks in the foundation,” said Warchol.

Foundation cracks are only the beginning.  The next heavy downpour of rain could cause yet another problem.  Water rushing into cracks in the ground around a home can have the opposite effect that a drought does.

“[Oversaturated soil] can push foundation walls in,” said Warchol.

Foundation cracks are also notorious for leaking, resulting in basement and crawl space flooding.
