We previously discussed danger levels one through three: toxic compounds, infectious illness, and allergens and particulates, respectively. Here, we will discuss the EPA’s fourth danger level, microbial growth. This includes micro-organisms, mold, and fungal spores.
As you most likely know, mold occurs naturally in the air. But it is when copious amounts of mold in areas it should not be that it can become toxic and cause health problems…more than your typical sneezing and coughing.
Generally two things can cause elevated toxic levels of mold: inadequate ventilation in unfinished areas of the home and moisture intrusion. Mold and mildew, which can aggravate allergies, are fungi that cause musty smells and grow in moist, stagnant air. The number one allergen is fecal matter from dust mites, which live off moisture in the air. Mild molds can cause sinus and respiratory infections, while severe molds can cause extreme health issues such as infertility. Watch this one minute video to learn more:
