Waterproofing a basement becomes a necessity when water begins to seep in and causes damage to the space and anything stored in it. But there are many warning signs before such occurances that, if acted upon, can help prevent the severe outcome of a flooded basement. 

1) Musty Odor/Dampness
A noticeable pungent or musty odor  or dampness on walls or floors in the basement are huge indicators of the existence of moisture and a sure sign of future damages.
