Fixing the Groundwater Leakage in Your Crawl Space

Not all crawl spaces leak during heavy rains, but if yours does then something must be done about it, even if it only happens every once in awhile.  If the problem is not fixed, it will continue to get worse.  Also, it’s mandatory to fix any groundwater leakage before installing the CleanSpace Encapsulation System to isolate your home from the earth.

The first thing that must be done is the installation of a sump pump.  It’s important that this sump pump has a sump liner to keep the mud out, an airtight lid, a floor drain, a pump stand, and an alarm system.  All of these features are crucial when it comes to your crawl space, and they can all be found on the SmartSump offered by Woods Basement Systems.

Pump alarms are especially important because without it, you would not be aware of problems until after they’ve already occurred.  A battery powered alarm sounds off automatically when the water rises above a certain level, giving you time to prevent the problem before more damages occur.

The next big step when it comes to transforming your crawl space from nasty to nice is listed below.  There are a few criteria that must be met when it comes to encapsulating your crawl space.  The solution must:

  • Prevent water vapor from flowing up from the soil or through the walls
  • Allow water to drain from the walls and floor to the sump
  • Prevent mold growth
  • Not get ruined when someone crawls on it
  • Be durable so it lasts as long as the house does
  • Be affordable

There are two basic approaches: a concrete floor and a plastic liner.  However, concrete floors don’t meet all of the criteria.  The only solution that does is the CleanSpace Encapsulation System offered by Woods Basement Systems.

CleanSpace can be fitted to your crawl space to completely seal it off from the earth.  It has multiple layers with different characteristics and flexibility and is puncture and tear resistant.  CleanSpace also has an antimicrobial additive in the material, which prevents mold growth on the liner.  CleanSpace is odorless, safe, and really brightens up your crawl space.
