Everything You Need to Know About Mold

Mold has a purpose. Its purpose is to breakdown dead organic matter, so plant and animal material doesn’t continue to grow and pile up. Organic means it is a material that was once living, such as wood. Mold sends out spores everywhere, which can lay dormant for many years before becoming active.

Since mold spores are everywhere and most home building contents are made from organic materials (furniture, boxes, clothing, etc.), this factor is uncontrollable. However, you can control the other thing that mold needs to grow—moisture.

Mold requires 70% relative humidity (RH) to grow, but some molds can grow at less RH.  In a crawl space, the RH of the surrounding air and the RH of the surfaces may be different because of the different temperatures. The RH level can be controlled by sealing off any vents in your crawl space and installing a SaniDry CX to dry out the air before it circulates into the rest of your home.
