Four Ways Basements Become Wet or Damp

Groundwater leakage.  This one is pretty self-explanatory.  Water can seep in through the flooring and walls of your basement, which can cause a lot of damage if the problem is not addressed.

Capillary action.  This refers to your basement walls absorbing liquid.  For example, a block wall may not leak, but it feels damp because it’s absorbing the water inside it to the surface like a sponge.

Water vapor coming in through your walls and floor.  The best way to solve this problem is by installing one a wall system offered by Woods Basement Systems along with the ThermalDry floor matting.  This considerably slows down water vapor transmission.

Exterior air leaking into your basement.  This becomes more of a problem when the outside air is warmer than the air inside of your home, such as during the summertime.  It’s that humid, damp air that carries lots of water into your basement.

Just because your basement may seem dry, it’s not really dry unless it feels, smells, and looks dry.
