How to Fix Freezing Discharge Lines

The sump pump carries water out and away from the home with a pipe—typically made out of plastic and about 3.81 cm in diameter.  This pipe runs either on the surface of the ground or in a shallow buried trench and discharges the water outside of the home.

The problem that often occurs in winter is the outlet of the pipe becomes blocked with ice and snow.  When the pump runs, it fills the pipe with water.  If the water can’t get out of the pipe because it is blocked, the water inside of the pipe will freeze.  This will result in a flooded basement because the water is unable to be pumped out.

In order to prevent this from happening, a product such as IceGuard must be installed.  IceGuard is specifically engineered to be installed outside of your home and eject the water away from the exterior wall in the event that a pipe freezes.  It is designed with holes in it to allow this to happen, yet no water at all gets out of the openings when the pipe is not frozen.  IceGuard is the easy solution to frozen discharge lines.
