Gravity Drains or Sump Pumps?

Once you’ve waterproofed your basement, you must have a way to carry the water it collects out and away from your home.  You can either install a pipe that uses gravity to help the water flow downhill to the exterior of your home, or you can use a sump pump to pump it up and out.

A simple pipe that relies on gravity to get the job done requires a substantial slope on your property for it to function correctly.  Most homes don’t have that kind of pitch on their property, and digging a deep trench can be a big mess and cause a disturbance to other objects outside of your home.

If a gravity drain works well with your property, it’s not a terrible option.  However, you must prevent it from getting clogged, frozen, or having the end covered up with ice, leaves, or other debris.  This is why a sump pump is the best option the majority of the time.

You may have heard horror stories from others about their sump pumps failing and flooding their basements but today’s technology is better than ever and extremely reliable.  A nice sump pump may not come cheap, but the protection it offers for your home and family pays off in the long run.
